The State of Fitness
June 1, 2023
I’ve been in the fitness industry since the mid-’80s and have seen a lot of diets and exercise fads come and go. Each one promises to be better than the previous one. If this were true, there wouldn’t be an obesity epidemic. Has anyone else noticed that things are not getting better?
Even with all the improvements in technology . . . still not getting better. In my opinion, technology has only made things easier. And we all have a desire to make our lives easier. But, let me tell you, easier isn’t always better. The less we move and the less we stimulate our bodies for growth, the worse we get.
However, there’s a flip side. Doing too much also can be harmful. The problem is that most people don’t know what is too little and what is too much. There is definitely a sweet spot for each person. So how do you find what is right for you? There are so many choices and options.
Classes, videos, gym memberships, group training, and personal training, to name a few. So, what is right for you? I think the answer depends on many variables. If you’re young and have a decent disposable income, then you have many options. As you get older your options may change because of health conditions, injuries, fears and other factors.
Here are some thoughts about the different types of fitness programs.
Gym memberships – doing it on your own. The plus is generally low cost and lots of options. This can be great if you know what you are doing. However, most people don’t. They generally hurt themselves or end up just using the cardio equipment, which gives them a false sense of accomplishment with minimal results. Low cost. No Accountability.
Classes can vary in style and degree of intensity. The plus is they’re usually less expensive and can be very energetic and motivating. The drawback is that they’re not specific to the individual’s needs or abilities. Prices vary. Minimal Accountability.
Exercise videos. Least favorite and definitely most dangerous. No Accountability.
One-on-one personal training. Best possible outcome. The results will vary depending on the quality of the trainer, the system and the philosophy. Most Expensive. Most Accountability.
At Bill Ross Fitness Solutions, I’ve chosen to specialize in one-on-one training. This helps me focus on each individual regardless of age or circumstances, from a high school student trying to make a team sport to a retiree wanting to regain their strength and balance. My one-on-one training helps my clients work out properly and, when they do it right, they don’t just get stronger physically, they get stronger mentally and emotionally.
I love it when my clients come back and tell me they just did something they’ve never been able to do, whether it’s physical or stand up to something or face a fear. Because that’s what it’s all about. Not just what you do in the gym, it’s how you take it with you and use it in your life
