Prep For Joint Replacement

This is for people who have had or are considering joint replacement. By the way, I’ve had a hip replacement myself.

If you’re thinking that once I’ve had my joint replaced, everything will be great. No more problems … you might want to think again.

I guess the first thing you should consider is why the joint wore out in the first place? Unless you’ve had some kind of accident or serious injury, your joint should last a lifetime. Here’s the thing — muscles move bones. This requires two sets of muscles to move bones in each direction. So, when a joint isn’t articulating properly, there eventually becomes a problem – generally inflammation and eventually arthritis.

You see, when a muscle gets damaged, for whatever reason, the body will shut it down to protect it. And, without you even knowing it, your body will compensate for it. After a while, you don’t feel the pain anymore, and you think everything is golden. But it’s not. The muscle will remain shortened, which causes an imbalance somewhere. Thus, creating more problems somewhere else.
Your body becomes much like an onion with layer on top of layer of one problem creating another problem.

So, you need to realize that the real problem isn’t the joint itself, but really the connecting muscles. This is why so many people who have joint replacements continue to have problems afterwards. Surgeons replace joints — that’s their job. Typically, they don’t care about the muscle.

So, if you’re considering surgery, you might want to find someone who can properly help you prepare for it. It’s called prehab. When prehab is done properly, your surgery tends to be more successful, and your recovery is faster and much more effective.

At Bill Ross Fitness Solutions, prehab is just one of the many things we do. So, if you need help with exercise, nutrition, sports conditioning, stretching, rehab or prehab, give us a call or go to our website. FYI – we are “old school” so don’t text.
